At the beginning of 2020, I set aside some money for the year that I could spend on books, courses, or events — all guilt-free. A learning budget.

I decided that the first thing I wanted to explore was digital marketing. I have always been curious about the world of marketing and have also done some copywriting in the past.

There was no shortage of online courses and programs, but finding one with all my needs was difficult. Some had a comprehensive program, but with either little support or out-dated curriculum. Courses actually that had one-on-one support were expensive. And the cheaper courses left you on your own with little sense of community. I also needed something that would result in some sort of portfolio or certificate — something I could show employers that actually meant something.

Was I being unrealistic? Was finding what I needed too good to be true? It started to feel like it.

Then I saw the Udacity Digital Marketing Nanodegree Course.

Udacity partners with tech companies to make sure they are providing the most up-to-date curriculum, so you know you’re learning in-demand skills. In the world of digital marketing, they cover everything — from social media marketing, to content management, to analytics. There are a lot of areas within the world of marketing and this Udacity course seemed like the perfect jumping-off point.

Along the way you get a mentor that you can have weekly calls with and chat with any time. As much of a self-learner as I am, having that support is incredibly important. You can also meet with a career coach to update your resume, LinkedIn, or just strategize about your career shift.

Upon completion, you’ll get a certificate and will have a portfolio to show employers.

I’m currently a few weeks into the program and have no regrets. I’m learning skills that I can use right away on potential clients, and that I know will help me in my career moving forward.

If you’re thinking about going into digital marketing, Udacity has a free eBook that you can download here.
